Winding Light was the second painting I completed during the 2023 Paint Kingsport! plein air event at Allandale Mansion. On that warm day at the end of June, I found a welcome patch of shade beneath the trees and settled in to paint.
What captured my attention was the winding road as it disappeared through the grounds. The gentle curve seems to beckon the viewer to continue the journey, offering only a glimpse of the gazebo waiting in the distance. It is a scene that invites curiosity and rewards those willing to wander a little farther.
One of the joys of plein air painting is discovering quiet moments of beauty in familiar places. I was honored that Winding Light received an Honorable Mention during the Paint Kingsport! competition, making this peaceful scene even more memorable.
I especially like the metaphor of the title—it suggests not only light winding through the landscape, but also the way light can lead us onward, one bend at a time.
